First Tee – Met NY Participants and Alumni Explore STEM Careers with Amazon Web Services
First Tee – Metropolitan New York recently partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to host two impactful events designed to introduce participants and alumni to the growing world of sports technology and career opportunities in STEM.
The first event, held at Golfzon Social in Scarsdale, brought together 16 participants from across FTMNY programs for an immersive Sports Tech Lab experience. Led by AWS representative Michael Murphy, students were introduced to the role technology plays in sports and the wide range of careers available within the field. Throughout the session, participants engaged with cutting-edge technology, explored AWS platforms, and asked thoughtful questions about future career paths. A standout moment included the introduction of AWS Educate, a training platform available to students ages 13 and up, with opportunities for scholarships and hands-on learning experiences. Murphy also shared that First Tee participants are given priority consideration for AWS internships, opening the door to meaningful opportunities well beyond the course. For many students, the experience sparked new curiosity and expanded their understanding of what is possible.
“I learned that First Tee participants can get internships in tech with AWS. I want to pursue a career as an anesthesiologist.”
— Alexander, 7th Grade
Students also had the chance to build real connections. One participant, Giancarlos, discussed an AI-driven augmented reality project he is developing and was invited to continue the conversation with AWS directly, highlighting the tangible opportunities that can come from moments like these.
The following day, the focus shifted from exploration to application, as First Tee alumni gathered at Five Iron Golf in New York City for the “Tee Up Your Career with AWS” networking event. This session provided alumni with hands-on career development support, including resume and cover letter reviews, mock interviews, and direct networking with AWS professionals. Alumni attended with clear goals in mind, whether refining resumes, exploring career paths in tech, or reconnecting with the First Tee community. For some, the event was an opportunity to take concrete next steps toward careers in fields like backend services, while for others, it was a chance to strengthen professional networks and build confidence.
Together, these two events highlight the full journey of a First Tee participant, from early exposure to new possibilities to taking actionable steps toward a future career. They also reinforce First Tee – Met NY’s commitment to being about more than the game, byproviding young people with the tools, connections, and opportunities they need to succeed both on and off the course.
